Time passes continuously and simultaneously in all periods during play, meaning that if the player travels into the past an hour before they are due to die in the present, they have only sixty minutes to save themselves in the past before their fate is sealed. The game's rationale depends on Science and Sorcery (the individual who rescues Kusch is an alchemically created homunculus who uses a technological Time Machine), but its conception of Time Travel is entirely science-fictional. Eventually it becomes clear that the only hope of survival lies in travelling to a variety of time periods, including the Middle Ages, the beginning of the twentieth century and the 1980s, and attempting to uncover the secrets of Kusch's forgotten past. The game then proceeds through a sequence of fatalities the player can repeatedly succeed in preventing their character's death, only to discover that they will then be killed in a different way, and resurrected yet again. This entity tells Kusch that if he wishes to survive he must change the sequence of events that led to his death, gives him an erratically functioning Time Travel device, and dispatches him into the recent past. The game begins with the murder of Eike Kusch, the player character, in a modern town in Germany, followed by his resurrection by a mysterious figure. The display is fully three-dimensional, and the gameplay revolves around puzzle solution and conversation with computer controlled characters, in the manner of Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle ( 1993) or The Longest Journey ( 1999). Shadow of Memories is a highly atmospheric graphical Adventure with an unusual plot the player must solve the mystery of their own murder. No interviews from Arakawa either.Videogame ( 2001 vt Shadow of Destiny). I've googled and never found any articles or posts relating SoM and FMA. The fact that Shadow of Memories came out in Feb 2001 and FMA came out in July 2001 of the same year, this can't be just coincidence. The whole plot was put in motion by Homunculus to guarantee his release as a paradox (the whole story is absolute bonkers).Īnyway it's quite easy to see a few similarities like the concept of alchemy, a Homunculus coming from a Philosopher's Stone, Hugo trying to find the Stone to resurrect his mom after a failed attempt with alchemy, the German influences but the biggest one is the similarity between Eike Kusch and Edward Elric in terms of design: But he ended up betraying Homunculus and he was punished with amnesia so Dr Wagner is really Eike Kusch. In the end it turns out Dr Wagner initially released Homunculus from the Stone and made a deal for eternal youth. He previously attempted to but failed due to his inexperience with alchemy and brought back the wrong soul. Hugo built a time machine to take revenge on Eike and to search for the Philosopher's Stone so that Hugo can resurrect his dead mom.

Through a series of events thats leads to the disappearance of Dr Wagner and the death of his wife, Eike finds out his unknown assailant is the son of Dr Wagner, Hugo. After much failed attempts Eike finds himself in the 15th century where he meets an alchemist, Dr Wagner.

There Homunculus gives him a device that enables him to time travel and change his fate. In Shadow of Memories (or Shadow of Destiny in NA) you play as Eike Kusch who gets killed by an unknown assailant after visiting the fictional German town of Lebensbaum and his soul is transported into a realm where he meets Homunculus.
